Song Review: Steep Canyon Rangers - āThatās Allā (Live, Rehearsal)
Thereās an undeniable groove to Steep Canyon Rangersā take on āThatās All,ā which comes out in a knotted ball of banjo, mandolin and fiddle driven by brushes on a percussion kit.
And while the groove cannot be denied, thereās another intangible that holds back the Genesis cover. Perhaps itās the song itself. Maybe itās that the band was working out the kinks in an empty Red Rocks Amphitheater. Or perhaps itās something else. But something is missing.
Thereās a germ of an SCR tune in that rhythm track. But āThatās Allā aināt all that.

Yāknow those bands where itās like 3/5 middle aged white men in a line, their main identifiers being slightly different hairstyles. Yes they are all wearing the same outfit. It can vary between bands, but the band members themselves will be sharing a wardrobe. Yeah thatās my music taste

Inktober Day 1-3!
Day 1: "Dream"
There's a reason Yellowstone is called Wonderland---or rather, there are thousands of reasons. Steam curls in roaring plumes from cracks in the ground; vivid colors form rainbow rings around simmering pools. Huge beasts roam rolling plains; the air shivers with the primordial sounds of wolf song and elk bugles. It's a land from fantasy, a dreamland, dangerous and delightful and wild.
If all that weren't enough to match this first prompt, there's one final clincherāYellowstone was where I firstĀ donned the green and gray and started working my dream job as a national park ranger. I spent two seasons there, and I know I only scratched the surface of what this park has to offer.
Day 2: "Spiders"
Tarantulas and Joshua treesāwhat a leggy, hairy, evocative pair! Despite being North Americaās largest spider, tarantulas arenāt all that dangerousāunless youāre a male tarantula trying to mate. When he goes in search of a female, she comes out of her burrow with the sole desire of wanting to kill him. His mating dance involves fending her off until the deed is done, after which she eats him. Itās a tough world for a lonely tarantula.
Readers of my first trilogy, Creatures of Light, will appreciate the image of Queen Gemma, a gentle-hearted entomologist, carefully recording and sketching these behaviors in the desert canyons around Alcoro.
Day 3: "Path"
This prompt could apply to literally any park in the NPS, but when I think of iconic paths, the first ones that come to mind are the Bright Angel and Kaibab trails that switchback down the Grand Canyon. They have an elegance to them, but also a danger thatās different from most other parksārather than climbing uphill to start a hike, they plunge down, drawing hikers toward the tantalizing Colorado River. Itās only when folks turn around and start the climb back up that they may realize just how far they went, how steep and rugged the terrain is, how hot it is, how exposed they are. Unsurprisingly, search and rescues are part and parcel of being a ranger in Grand Canyon.

Square Dance Hell: Part 3/3
Swear warning
Part 1
Part 2
I've had this script sitting in google docs for months (after posting the initial idea), so it's a relief to take it off my to-do list. It didn't turn out exactly how I expected, but that's art!
Creator notes:
Page 9, where Eddie's on the ground by himself and everyone's walking away, I don't know, drawing that got me really emotional. T-T
Who's throwing french fries???
I just made up that Black Sabbath tee because I didn't want to rip anything off too much. It's kind of cool, maybe?
Eddie ended up looking so ticked off about being interrupted! XD
The final panel was really hard with all the text and the layers and the doodles that had to be arranged. The quote is Tolkien; spoken by Faramir to Eowyn.
So where is Jason? My theory is that he was in the square dance class at first, but the basketball coach freaked out when he twisted his ankle a little on the first day, so he got excused.
Did Eddie give up on that class, or was the cheerleader's siren call too tempting to resist? ;) I like to think he would rather suffer through it than miss the chance.
Songs I listened to waaaaay too many times: Sweetness by Jimmy Eat World, Women Like To Slow Dance by Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, On Your Collarbone by Jordan Klassen, Dreams by Fleetwood Mac.

Steep Canyon Rangers Play for āPasteā at MerleFest
- āCome Dance,ā āCall the Captainā and āDeep Endā feature in set and conversation
Steep Canyon Rangers mixed the old with the new during a three-song set for Paste magazine at MerleFest.
Recorded April 25 in North Carolina and freshly released, the performance and conversation about the bandās history finds the Steeps playing unplugged and soloing into vocal microphones.
Bassist Barrett Smith fronts the band on āCome Danceā and āCall the Captain,ā which spotlight the Rangersā bluegrass side with pure harmonies, supple playing and drummer Mike Ashworth stepping out front on Dobro.
These songs feature Graham Sharpās banjo, Mike Gugginoās mandolin and Nicky Sandersā fiddle recalling the Rangersā roots and adding nuance to Smithās vocals as he sings about love and coal mines.
Guitarist and newest Ranger Aaron Burdett takes the reins on āDeep End,ā a series of clichĆ©s - think hit the ground running and bull in a china shop, for example - driven by Ashworthās percussion and a more rock ānā roll feel. Burdett replaced co-founder Woody Platt and his songs changed the Rangers stylistically and vocally. At this point, it still sounds unnatural, but hope springs eternal where the Steep Canyon Rangers are concerned.

Omfg. Venting. Just low key almost died. LOL.
I have this old ass truck. Itās not ancient ancient but itās like a 97? A Ford Ranger. Idk something like that. Not as old as my cool old Chevy was. But it does have like 280K miles on it lol.
Anyways. Usually itās a tank. But it had some issues a few days previously and then today those issues kinda came to the front.
It had died randomly when I was in town last week. No issue, I just restarted. Had to stop in the middle of the road but itās down town ish so no one is going that fast.
But today! Just a few minutes ago! It was losing power going up our steep hill. We live on a steep gravel hill thatās between 13-15 percent grade in most spots. Go look up how steep that is if you donāt know. Itās steep steep. Especially for a drivable hill.
So Iām backing out of our lower driveway (where the animals are) loaded up with my dog and my freshly milked goat milk and as I go to chug up the hill to our house the Rpmās just TANK. Iām revving first gear and it is not going. Itās sputtering like itās gonna die. I slam on the brakes and engage the E brake (idk about newer cars but on old cars the brakes donāt work properly when the engine is off) (this is a stick shift car idk if I mentioned that).
So then im stuck. I canāt get it to power up or whatever. Iām not a car person. I try different gears and just gunning it and it doesnāt work. Im terrified to turn it off all the way. And my cellphone A) doesnāt work rn and B) doesnāt get reception on the hill even if it did work. The only person close to me is Quiet Dave the neighbor who doesnāt talk to anyone. And thereās a REAL possibility that my truck just fucking rolls off the cliff on either side of our STEEP ASS HILL and no one even sees what happens.
So long story short. I do restart it. Multiple times. And on one of those times the RPMs went up. Gunned it and it worked. Totally damaged my poor E brake, I smelled rubber, but I refused to disengage it until I was moving. I finally disengaged it and made it up the hill. It almost died again near the top but we made it.
To say I was shaken is an embarrassing understatement. I was like. Ugly sobbing. My poor dog was looking at me like I was an alien. I was shaking so bad I could barely walk. I have so much driving anxiety (anxiety doesnāt even cover it) and I HATE driving up this all already. This fucking hill has been a source of stress for me for almost literally my entire life. (My uncle used to live where my brother / neighbor lives now and we used to come here for thanksgiving and Christmas sometimes and I vividly remember thinking that weād just slide backwards down the hill and into oblivion cuz thereās no way any car could just keep climbing up this insane hill).
Anyways. I bitch constantly about the hill but hereās a good example of how itās legitimately scary sometimes. All fun and games until ur brakes donāt work right and you remember thereās nothing but canyons and trees and blackberry bushes on either side. ššš
#with my E brake on I would probably stay fine but Iād be stuck there until someone else happened to go up or down and found me#venting#sorry not sorry Iām not proofreading this haha I type too fast and am dyslexic and thatās a bad mix

Boyd and š¶š
iāve been waiting for the music question all my lifeā¦
music headcanon: as we all know, boyd can canonically clog! so i think when heās just chill, having a glass of whiskey or two, heāll be listening to some bluegrass. albums i think heād enjoy: long violent history (tyler childers) and tell the ones i love (steep canyon rangers).
angsty headcanon: alright i guess iāll bring up my codependency theory! i think boyd is identity-less without others. he so badly desires others to desire him, whether it be as a leader, lover, or enemy. when heās a alone he doesnāt know who he is. when you see him around others, he knows who he is. a racist, a preacher, an outlaw. but alone? heās just the boy who lost his momma.
thank you for this one, it was fun!!
